The proposed Belleayre resort would be a disaster for the Catskill region. NY Governor Eliot Spitzer has overstepped his authority to fast track the huge project that has been stalled for over 8 years of environmental review and fierce opposition of local residents.
Beyond the devastating impacts on stormwater runoff, depletion of local aquifers and destruction of 500 acres of pristine forest wilderness and wildlife habitat, the project would draw over 300 below-poverty wage workers to a sparsely populated rural area with a severe shortage of affordable housing . The secondary growth would impair water quality and necessitate a 30 to 40 BILLION dollar filtration plant for NYC. Local organizations and businesses are suing NYC and NYS to overturn the massive corporate welfare scheme of public funds being used to support this private corporation.
The public scoping comment period has been extended to Jan 14 and a second round of public hearings will be scheduled soon. Send your comments opposing the Bellayre resort to: (Put "Scoping -Belleayre" in Subject Line)
